I was kicking myself when I saw it today because I know she wants to gut public education. Like, we all know this— and I didn’t pick up on it until now.
The Premier is, after all, a devotee of Ayn Rand, who divides the world into the “makers and the takers”. The “makers” are the ones who create something, chiefly businesses, and the “takers” are supposedly the rest of who are little more than wage slaves or parasites on the body politic. So Smith seems intent on demolishing any program that might be considered the public good, whether in health care or education or social services. The separatist nonsense is just a distraction from what is really going on. Let’s hope more and more people start to wise up.

And she is vindictive with her flawed logic that Calgary tax rates are higher because Calgary is growing! That should mean, in an arithmetically consistent world, that there's more people to pay the taxes.

I am worried that there IS logic to what The Premier is doing if one accepts her philosophy. While what she is doing may seem chaotic at times, that chaos is very carefully planned. The first step in that plan is to make public services as miserable as possible for as many people as possible by underfunding those services. The second step is to offer a “solution” that is “private” or exclusionary in some way —private surgical clinics (which pick the low-hanging fruit) charter schools (which choose their students), Private-pay surgeries or schools (available only to the well-heeled). The third step is to allow private insurance or corporations into the mix, at which point all the changes become irrevocable - especially under free trade provisions.
Not saying she doesn't have an evil plan. The lack of logic and evidence is in her explanations of her very calculated efforts to cut public services in such a way that ONLY private ownership and operation, by her friends, will save us.
What I meant was that from DS’s perspective, she is taking logical steps toward her goal of ending universal programs, and she so far has been “successful” in those terms. The test will come in the next election when whetherher other goal of remaking in power is also successful. Regardless, by then it may be too late to undo the damage.
And also to allow her more influential supporters (that is, those with money) to get their hip operations faster or their kids out of the overcrowded classrooms. One of the benefits of universality in both education and healthcare is that the movers and shakers of a society have a vested interest in seeing those systems improve. Once those same movers and shakers can insulate themselves from shoddy services, they will start to resent their taxes going to those services for the rest of us —and the downward spiral continues.
Divide nd conquer is an all-too-powerful strategy, and one that Danielle Smith applies in almost every policy. She picks and chooses those she will hurt and those she will reward or appease very carefully —always with an eye to her political advantage. She is the most calculating and most cynical politician I have ever observed. That, plus her skillful communication style, which absolutely drips with false sincerity, also makes her extremely effective —and thus dangerous.
