FWIW, I was at Convention when the Leap Manifesto was introduced. I was sitting with a bunch of Steelworkers and Longshoremen. Not Prairie oil-workers. That table of men and a few women were dismissive of the idea that the NDP should become Greener (remember how respected and impressive Elizabeth May was back then?). Their only concern re: the Leap Manifesto was that reduced oil shipments would reduce the number of ships at harbour (the Longshoremen), and that in general being green and the 'just transition' was just too aspirational, naĆÆve even, something they didn't think worth worrying about. There was some credence given to the concept that strategically, it would bring more environmentalists into the tent and maybe get some more seats in the house. But in retrospect, that little table of twelve I was sitting with seemed an odd mix: trade unionists willing to vote as per the union's decided strategy, but also, men and women very much wanting guilt-free material wealth, toys, vacations to Hawai'i, toxic bro-culture --all those things that the conservatives have dangled-- and they didn't want to think about their environmental impact, nor did their unions seem to want to strategize about it. Unfortunately, as hindsight is showing us.
