I remember taking two weeks off last Christmas and I didn't miss a beat; this Christmas, the beats kept coming. I give it four out of five chilies for spiciness ;-)
I’ll donate to a legal fund on fighting the withdrawal from CPP. We also need to look at legal action in the UCP abdication of their responsibility to provide public health care and public education.
You probably have a point there as well. I would love to think we have some say after they’re elected as well (and with any normal government, I definitely would). This govt…
Her move re CPP is all about getting Alberta out of every federal program to feed her separatist agenda. We have to push back hard but it would be 100% better if no one ever voted UCP again because that is voting against one’s own best interests at every level.
I don't think CPP ---> APP shall transpire. Smith has lied about it in the past ("No one's going to touch your pension'). She realized that her Firewall fever dreams were not & are not shared by Albertans. So first things first, win the election and then conive to build a plutocracy where public assets are diverted to corporations.
However like her other schemes , only about a third of Albertans would support changes to the pension status quo. The UCP are demonstrably inept at providing good government for Albertans. We know that and will fight like cornered wolverines to prevent theft of our hard-earned CPP.
At a town hall here in High River that the NDP had put in I too postulated having individuals take their money out of CPP if they so chose. The separatists in the crowd seemed to want it all though.
Alberta pension investments are like the ucp itself- inept. And now being chaired by an author and signatory of the Firewall Manifesto Harper we are further down that road of division. (I still find it telling that Harper did not do any of the things for Alberta while serving as PM that he demanded in the letter. Would that action/inaction be self serving?)
Deidre, dynamite piece today, thanks. Tell me where to sign onto the GoFundMe if it ever materializes.
In the mean time I again offer to Mrs David Moretta (smith) that I will personally pay your moving expenses to south of the 49th so you can be with your chosen form of rampant destruction and closer to your orange drag queen pedophile sex addict hero and his group of incompetents. Call me Dani before month’s end to take advantage of this offer!
Harper had some political acumen— he knew those things wouldn’t matter at the federal level. It was meant to galvanize provincial conservatives and it did. Klein let Doug Griffiths research the possibilities of implementing all of those things and while it might make people feel better, the costs were ridiculously high for things we already pay for with federal tax. Never been an appetite to increase tax in this province and they weren’t going to try and sell it.
Smith has isolated that small group and through them she’s trying to create the impression that the will is far greater than it is (see Jared Wesley’s posts on populism for more on that).
I remember running a GA day in Edmonton for my association. I had Don Martin in to speak as well as our national coordinator Randall McCaulley who had been an EA to Jean Chrétien
Martin recalled flying over Alberta with Harper during a federal campaign and asked if they were stopping in Alberta. Harper said look left, look right, except for a seat in Edmonton we don’t need to stop and campaign.
Randall recalled a very similar question of Chrétien as they flew over with the opposite answer. Except for a seat in Edmonton there’s nothing there.
So once they (conservatives) elevate to federal politics self preservation sets in. Promise Alberta everything it wants. Or thinks it wants. Deliver nothing and blame the Liberals.
I've been trying to tell UCP Albertans that it's not the provincial government who pays the employer portion into our Canada Pension Plan for over a year. Ever since Dani started musing about an Alberta Pension Plan. The only employer's portion of CPP the provincial government pays is for provincial employees.
You don’t want to see the replies to this on the former bird site. Just the same BS 200+ times by a dozen guys and their pro-separatist sock accounts, I’m sure.
I'm certain I don't want to see that. It's willful ignorance on their part since everything I said can be verified over and over on various different sites if they'd just look.
I don’t want the province to take Alberta out of cpp either. But I don’t think it’s correct to say that the pension fund belongs to individual citizens. I think it’s more like a contract. The Federal government has established a contribution schedule for workers. And then made a contractual commitments to deliver payments per a schedule.
So if the pension plan investments overperform who benefits? Do you the pension fund beneficiary get paid extra?
Better check the contract and wrb of agreements and negotiations that sorted this out among the provinces and the feds over the years.
I’m a cpp beneficiary. I get paid based on my lifetime pensionable earnings and the cpp formula. I’d prefer the payor to have the best credit rating possible. So that means the feds over the province of alberta. Unless of course you believe that Alberta could somehow improve its credit rating by separating….which I think unlikely.
I think back in the 1960’s, it was acceptable to look at it as formulaic because it would have been a massive undertaking to figure out a million people’s contributions. That’s no longer the case.
However, the other important part is that Alberta has maintained the youngest average population because people retired elsewhere. That means their pensionable amounts could go to Alberta without them being able to vote on it. I just can’t see that being legally allowed when they can figure it out individually.
Pension plans don’t get built on an individual basis. The fund part with all the assets aggregates the contributions and investments. For the benefit of all the pension plan members. So I don’t think it makes sense to treat the cpp as the sum of 30+ million individual plans
Provinces joined the plan and have some rights to leave. Not my area of detailed expertise but like a lot of federal/provincial plans in Canada it’s a mess. Alberta has a younger workforce than all the other provinces which has led to an argument that Albertans have been paying too much and receiving too little.
I’m not sure I buy that. I contributed to the cpp just like any other Canadian. Now I’m drawing out pursuant to the formula. Like any other Canadian. I just want the counterparty with the best credit rating so I can count on receiving what they’ve promised. That’s Canada. Not Alberta.
I agree with that right up until the UCP thinks 53% of the plan should be transferred to a manager of their choosing— then it’s only the sum of individual contributions. This is also the first time they might actually have to deal with a province wanting to pull their citizen’s contributions out, so it’s possible some things they thought might work in theory will have to be revised. It being Alberta to do it is also a problem because only the people within the province get to vote but the province is banking on getting contributions from people who no longer live here and have any say. I just can’t see them allowing that to happen to people who don’t get a say in the decision.
A go fund me would EASILY raise enough, what are we waiting for? She’s blown over ALL of our rights like the authoritarian she is, let’s GO! The media attention alone would give me pleasure to up my contribution!

Three cheers for Arthur Schopenhauer!
