I think your $37 million as the cost of the referendum is wrong; the 2023 election cost $37 million and used 13,000 workers, so 60,000 workers to count the ten referendum ballots is going to cost more.
I think it's why Smith keeps lying about 700,000 people wanting a referendum because she shmused the two very different petitions together. I think she is now in the 'train falling through the bridge into the river' portion of her train wreck.
The whole thing is convoluted by design. Clarity in the form of a yes/no question or an up & down vote by MLAs would kill it...and Smith's political career.

Good column, but I can’t agree with your assessment of Mr Guthrie. I am sure he is a nice and honest man but he was one of Ms Smith’s first supporters for the leadership of the Frankenparty and of her policies. Although there is a nostalgia for the good old PCs of yesteryear, it was their hubris and abysmal policy choices, especially handling the revenue side of Alberta’s budget that resulted in the takeover of their party.
The sooner Albertans wake up and smell the BS the better.

Or maybe Smith could cancel all the referendums since none of them are citizen-initiated, and stop wasting our money.
