One summer I went in a ride-along with a power worker who was checking out power lines to farms and we met many people, older yes, who spoke only French. This was and is Northern Alberta. Likewise about growing up up there, and I’m one of those people who had parents with enough foresight to put me in French immersion. It helped me immensely in my military career and has helped me in my post- military career even more, despite the fact that I live in rural Alberta! I also have two kids who are enrolled in a francophone school and it makes me so damn proud to know they’ll be fluent in both of our official languages.
I had my eldest two in French Immersion and we ended up in a town without any. One of the schools started it the year after my youngest, but they did start a program — in rural AB 😏
I feel for you ❤️ We actually based our post-military permanent move on where our kids would be able to continue in a francophone school. And I acknowledge that we had that luxury, but it goes to show that people want it! What possible reason is there to argue you don’t want access to learning a second language? In what backward, backwoods world does that make sense??
Omg we TRIED!! We were moving from Sylvan Lake for spouse’s work, in Calgary, and neither of us wanted to live in the city. Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks. Airdrie was weird — never saw any kids! So we looked at Crossfield, put in an offer — supposedly got it, but then they backed out because of an error on the paper work. It was July. Spouse asked about Carstairs and I was like “I’m not moving halfway back to Sylvan!” Anyhow, Strathmore had an enhanced French program for grade 5-9 so we took that. Moved in August 21 😬
I was at the Sherwood Park Alberta Next panel, and the UCP brought up bilingualism (the RCMP requires high level senior management to be bilingual, apparently) as a reason to replace the RCMP with a provincial force (because they claim the requirement is not fair to Albertans, somehow).

My mom is from a French family in St. Paul. She spoke French at home, went to school in French up until high school -- and her grandparents didn't speak English at all.
Unfortunately, I started school a year before French immersion programs started in the Edmonton area, and I regret that I still can't speak it fluently despite years of study (my dad is Ukrainian - the other main ethnic group in that area - and we spoke neither language at home).

I actually hate when he speaks — it’s so difficult to listen to. But yes, he’d absolutely be taken with drug jails.
