I think the reason it’s not that difficult to "get" Alberta from the outside is that its experiences aren’t actually all that unique.
Like most Canadians - and people everywhere - Albertans care fundamentally about the rising cost of living, healthcare, and job security. The primary distinction is that in Alberta, "job security" is heavily intertwined with the energy sector.
But decarbonization and green policy are not anathema to that industry; rather, they serve as a convenient catalyst for political elites (and malign foreign actors) to cultivate a culture of grievance.
Similarly, invoking "distance from the political centre" as an excuse for alienation holds little weight in 2026. In an era where we can seamlessly connect across vast distances, geographic isolation is largely a manufactured divide. (And even the people of Carleton felt alienated - after all, they voted for Pierre Poilievre for years... until they didn’t.)
The vocal, terminally online minority in Alberta should be heard, but not heeded - not because their real-life struggles aren't valid, but because those struggles are far from unique.
Those struggles are shared by their fellow Canadians, and by fellow human beings across the rich world.
None of us are all that special (even if our algorithms pretend otherwise).
