This is a bit beyond the content of this post, but shouldn’t the Alberta Labour Federation call for a general strike? I know it sounds extreme — we’re not France — but now the provincial government has employed the “nuclear option”, what is left but a response equally extreme?
More than anything, it is the cavalier application of the Notwithstanding Clause that must give every Albertan pause, unionized or no. In this particular case, the government has declared, openly and unapologetically, that they don’t care what anyone says.
Very proud of a number of students here in High River protesting in support of their teachers 100 yards away from Mrs Moretta’s (smith) failing train car restaurant. They were polite, informed and represented themselves very well.
Too bad Mrs Moretta couldn’t be A) in the country, B) in the province or C) at home defending her cowardly decision
The kids, Mrs Moretta, were speaking; and like everything else in your world if that voice didn’t come from inside your own head you couldn’t hear it.
I think we can trace this back much further. We stood in front of the Legislature in 1994 asking for a fair deal for our kids. My dad worked to raise teacher wages above the poverty level in the sixties.
I have questions though. The Education Act appears to allow the Minister to issue, refuse, suspend or cancel a teaching certificate or letter if authority if he or she considers it appropriate to do so. Are there any safeguards?
Does the government have the ability and will to rewrite the section of the Education Act that requires teachers in the public, separate and Francophone schools to belong to the ATA?
Also, does anything prevent a government from dissolving the public school system altogether? The Charter? Oh, right...about that...
The UCP removed the word “public” from schools under Kenney. Could they use the notwithstanding clause on public education? I’m no lawyer but I’d also say that we only have rights to whatever the government wants to allow us a right to. We only have freedoms if they want to allow us them. Always true, always at risk.

what I did catch is that some UFCW members were polled and found 90% support teachers, 78% support a general strike ans 69% would participate.
